Simon studied for a degree in physics at Oxford University and a PhD in high energy astrophysics at Southampton University, and worked as a researcher into microwave satellite communications at Portsmouth University.
Simon started his intellectual property career in the IBM UK IP department where he trained and qualified as a patent attorney before becoming manager of a team of patent attorneys. His activities for IBM included patent drafting and prosecution, trademarks, copyright, licensing, litigation, portfolio management and budgeting; this work provided an in-house perspective and understanding of the business role of intellectual property. From IBM, Simon joined a private practice firm where he became a partner with responsibility for a broad spectrum of clients, from startups and universities to global software firms, before joining Script IP as a consultant in 2019.
Simon has worked in most fields of computing and telecommunications, including silicon devices and manufacture, network and storage infrastructure, image, speech and signal processing, artificial intelligence, data and voice communications, database technologies, and satellite navigation systems and applications. He has been involved in UK Hearings and many European oppositions, both defending and attacking granted patents, including at the appeal level.
Simon is currently Chair of the Computer Technology Committee of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and is a former member of the CIPA council. He is active in the debate regarding software and IP, and is an expert on issues such as the patenting of computer programs and the handling of artificial intelligence (AI) inventions.
I’m indebted to the team at Script IP for consistently helping to keep my clients happy and achieving IP objectives on time and within budget.
